Police responded to a developing incident Tuesday at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), prompting a lockdown at the school’s Warwick campus as authorities investigated reports of a possible threat.
According to early reports, the campus was placed on lockdown after alerts indicated that an individual may have been armed in a wooded area near Commonwealth Avenue. Local law enforcement, including the Warwick Police Department and fire officials, quickly arrived on the scene to assess the situation and ensure public safety.
School officials confirmed that the lockdown was issued as a precautionary measure while police worked to determine the credibility and scope of the threat. Students and staff were instructed to remain inside, and classes were temporarily suspended during the response.
At this stage, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or an active shooter inside campus buildings. Authorities have not yet released detailed information about any suspect or whether a weapon was recovered.
The Community College of Rhode Island, the state’s largest public community college with multiple campuses, has experienced similar precautionary lockdowns in the past, often resolved without harm.
This incident comes amid heightened concerns about campus safety across Rhode Island following recent violent events in the state, which have renewed discussions about security measures and law enforcement presence at educational institutions.
Police continue to investigate, and updates are expected as more information becomes available. Students and members of the public are advised to follow official CCRI alerts and local authorities for real-time developments.
